About Me

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. Throughout my childhood, drawing was one of my favorite past times, rivaled only by my love of animals and the outdoors. When I wasn't drawing I could be found up trees and in oceans, or sitting for hours waiting for a chipmunk to come out of its hole (I was convinced it wanted to be my new best friend). Since art is complementary to most things, I most often combined my two loves into one blissful activity- drawing animals and the natural world. Countless horse sketches and flower paintings adorned our family's fridge; and when it came time for me to spend my precious daylight hours in school, I covered hundreds of notebooks and dividers with ink drawings of flowers, trees, horses, and other animals. Nothing was- and is- more magical to me than the natural wonders around us. One only has to look out the window to find Divine miracles- in the delicate veins of a maple leaf, the sweet friendly sound of a chickadee's song, even in (and maybe especially in!) a tenacious flower pushing its way through the crack in the sidewalk.

In high school I had the opportunity to enroll in an art class as my sophomore elective - which provided the first formal space I had in which to learn and create art. Inspired, I continued my art

study as an undergrad at St. Mary's College of Maryland. After college I continued my study at the Mitchell School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, where I had the good fortune to study watercolor for several years with William C. Wright.

For most of my life I was interested in extreme realism, and many of my watercolors and pencil drawings are photographic in nature. Although I still very much enjoy this style, an magical experience in the desert caused me to reevaluate and change my trajectory. While hiking in Joshua Tree National Park with my then one-year-old daughter on my back, I realized that I had left my camera at home. Disappointed, I wondered how I was going to take pictures back to serve as reference photos for my paintings. The desert soon spoke to me however, and I 'heard' very clearly that I didn't need pictures- that instead of painting just what I was seeing, I could attempt to translate how I was feeling onto the canvas. I returned home more inspired than ever and with a new path in view. The painting Lizard Dreams is one of the original paintings inspired by this new vision for my art- and for my life.

Hanging out with Foxy Moxy in the wildlife garden at Earthfire Institute. Over the years, my biggest artistic influences (besides Nature itself) have been Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe. I admire Frida Kahlo's fearless and unapologetic portrayal of her emotional life on the canvas. She translated everything she was feeling into works of complex beauty and meaning.  I admire Georgia O'Keeffe's bold use of color and form to bring feeling and magic to subjects in nature.

I believe that art can be a mirror of the artist's inner life and experiences, while at the same time connecting with the experiences and memories of those viewing the work. I use bold color and symbolism to create this connection. My greatest desire is that you see something in one of my paintings that sparks something within- something that causes feeling of deep (and perhaps previously forgotten) recognition- of your humanity, of the wonder of the natural world, and the belief in the magic all around you.
